Feature Story
Due: Thursday, Nov. 14, Re-do due Dec. 5
TRT: 2:30 (-5 points if shorter than 2:20 or longer than 2:40)
Subject: A focus story about a person who is an example of a larger trend or issue with a legitimate news peg.
Purpose: The purpose of this package is to use all the tools you’ve learned in this semester.
Sources: At least four different points of view
Format: Script must include an anchor intro on a separate page and a properly formatted script. Use our signature outcue: “Your Name, Emory News Now. “
Grading: Your package will be graded on a scale of 100 points in the following categories:
1. Anchor Intro (5 points)
2. Story Organization (15 points)
3. Writing (20 points)
4. Video (20 points)
5. Editing (20 points)
6. Voice, Delivery and Stand-up (10 points)
7. Accuracy and Proofreading (10 points)
As I watch your story, I will evaluate your reporting, writing and editing on the following criteria:
1. Is the focus of the story clear?
2. Do you show/tell viewers why the story is worthwhile?
3. Does your story follow the typical focus style structure?
4. Is your main source compelling and memorable?
5. Do your other sources represent three different points of view?
6. Are your SOTs memorable? Do they add credibility, emotion or opinion?
7. Is your writing conversational? Are you using active voice and S-V-O sentences? Do you write to the pictures?
8. Does your opening video and nat sound grab a viewer’s attention?
9. Is the rest of your video well shot? (steady, well lit, well framed, a variety of shots, shots relevant to story, shots close to the action)
10. Is your story well edited? (countdown, pad, nat sound, great opening/closing shots, several good quality sequences, consistent axis line, no jump cuts or flash frames, good variety of shots, good audio levels and mix)
10. Does your stand-up work as a bridge or ending to your package? Is it well shot in a place that is relevant to the story?
11. Do your voice and delivery enhance the package?
12. Have you confirmed all the facts in your script? Have you proofread your script carefully? (especially all supers containing names and titles) Have your formatted your anchor lead and script properly?
