Hard News Story

Due: Thursday, October 24 ; re-do due November 19

TRT: 1:30 (-5 points if shorter than 1:20 or longer than 1:40)

Subject: A hard news story on an event or announcement at Emory or in Atlanta

Purpose: The purpose of this package is to use all the tools you’ve learned in class so far (like good shooting, editing and broadcast writing) in a hard news package.

Sources: At least three different points of view

Format: Script must include an anchor intro and a properly formatted script. Be sure to include video pad time at the end of your package. Use our signature outcue: “Your Name, Emory News Now. “

Grading: Your package will be graded on a scale of 100 points in the following categories:

1.     Anchor Intro (5 points)

2.     Story Organization (20 points)

3.     Writing (20 points)

4.     Video (20 points)

5.     Editing (20 points)

6.     Voice, Delivery and Stand-up (5 points)

7.     Accuracy and Proofreading (10 points)

As I watch your story, I will evaluate your reporting, writing and editing on the following criteria:

1.     Is the focus of the story clear?

2.     Do you show/tell viewers how the story affects them and why it’s important?

3.     Does your story have an identifiable story structure? (incl. beginning, middle, end)

4.     Do your sources represent three different points of view?

5.     Are your SOTs memorable? Do they add credibility, emotion or opinion?

6.     Is your writing conversational? Are you using active voice and S-V-O sentences? Do you write to the pictures?

7.     Does your opening video and nat sound grab a viewer’s attention?

8.     Is the rest of your video well shot? (steady, well lit, well framed, a variety of shots, shots relevant to story, shots close to the action)

9.     Is your story well edited? (pad, nat sound, great opening/closing shots, several good quality sequences, consistent axis line, no jump cuts or flash frames, good variety of shots, good audio levels and mix)

10.Does your stand-up work as a bridge or ending to your package? Is it well shot in a   place that is relevant to the story?

11. Do your voice and delivery enhance the package?

12. Have you confirmed all the facts in your script? Have you proofread your script carefully? (especially all supers containing names and titles) Have your formatted your anchor lead and script properly?
